SC Waterloo continues to impress
Monday - May 21st, 2012 at 12:00 PM by Ryan McCracken (Record Staff)
Adis Hasecic potted an early pair of goals and Drazen Vukovic added three more to lead SC Waterloo Region to a 5-0 routing of London City in their Canadian Soccer League matchup at University Stadium on Sunday evening.

It only took Waterloo four minutes to make a statement in their first game against the London club. After breaking free from the defense, Hasecic skilfully navigated past London goalkeeper Zoran Puscia and took his time safely depositing the ball in the net to give Waterloo the lead.

"I'm going to keep training very hard and try to keep bringing the same mentality to games. I think through my hard work I will bring a lot to the team, and there will be a lot of goals" Hasecic said through an interpreter. Hasecic played his first game as a member of SC Waterloo Region on Sunday after spending time playing in Germany.

"The midfield is the strongest part of our team. We have really quality players in our midfield who know how to pass the ball right at the right time."

Ten minutes after the opener, Hasecic headed home a well-placed cross from Shawn Brown for his second goal of the evening.

"I've been looking for that type of attacking player," head coach Lazo Dzepina said through an interpreter of Hasecic.

"You can tell we did a bit better than in the first game, but I hope that we continute to hit better form... Some players are going to take time to get fitted into our team, we'll need a month or so into the season for them to get to know each other."

While London City managed to tighten the flow of play at the onset of the second half, Waterloo was too strong on the defensive and Vukovic added three counter-attacking goals to seal the game.

Brown's tenacity on the pitch was also pivotal in Waterloo’s overall production on Sunday. On top of his assist on Hasecic's second goal, Brown appeared strong with the ball, leading a number of Waterloo attacks, and was strong on the back check, helping out the team's defensive corps on numerous occasions.

"Brown has very good physical attributes, but he also has to change some things in his attitude, sometimes he doesn’t see his teammates to make the pass," Dzepina said.

The victory puts SC Waterloo Region fighting for top of the league standings with two wins in as many games in their inaugural season as members of the Canadian Soccer League’s first division.

"It's going to be hard this year, but our goal is to make the playoffs in our first time in the league," Brown said.

SC Waterloo Region face the 2011 champions Toronto Croatia on Sunday at 8 p.m.
