TORONTO - Monday, February 27 -
The CSL Showcase involving teams with some of the best U-19s in Ontario
takes place this coming Friday, March 2 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.
Games will be 2 x 40 minute halves played on two indoor surfaces from 9 am
through to late afternoon and will be viewed by coaches from Canadian universities
and U.S. colleges as well as scouts representing clubs at the professional level in North America.
Soccer Showcase events are becoming increasingly popular in Canada and the United States
as more young players that have been a part of rapid expansion of the North American game
during the past 10 to 15 years reach maturity with exceptional soccer skills
and become candidates for professional soccer and their national teams.
Gerry Gentile, a soccer coach in York Region just north of Toronto who chaired a working
group that presented a blueprint in 2002 for a top-flight professional league to be
launched in Canada, said at the time: "There is nothing in the DNA of a Canadian that
says he or she cannot be a great soccer player."
Showcase events have reached astronomical proportions in the United States including
the increasingly popular Disney Soccer Showcase Events of more than 600 teams in
competition in one location, an ideal forum for coaches and scouts to seek out promising young prospects.
